Diagnosing Asthma

Helping you understand how asthma is diagnosed

Waiting for a diagnosis

Asthma is an important diagnosis to get right. It can take weeks or months (or even years) before enough information has been gathered to confirm or discount a diagnosis of asthma.

Working out the probability of asthma

Working out the probability of asthma is often the first step toward making a diagnosis. To work out the probability of asthma the sort of information needed is:

  • The symptoms you have (for example, cough, wheeze, breathlessness, chest tightness)
  • If the symptoms you have change over time, or are made worse by anything.
  • Any other relevant medical conditions (such as hay fever, eczema, food allergy)
  • If any family members have asthma or other allergic conditions.
  • Any other factors which make asthma less likely

Using the ADxDA tool to calculate the probability of asthma

The ADxDA tool uses a mathematical equation (often called a model) that can calculate the probability of an asthma diagnosis; a number between 0 - 100% (a higher number, indicates a higher probability of asthma).

Working out the probability of asthma helps guide what the next steps should be. Click on the links below to find out more (or select the link that best fits your situation):

I’m a parent or carer of someone awaiting an asthma diagnosis

It’s OK if you leave your first doctor’s appointment with more questions than answers about your child’s suspected asthma. It’s a common situation and Asthma UK have some useful resources to help you make sense of it all.

You’re not alone while waiting for a diagnosis. If you’re confused or have more questions, you can always WhatsApp the Asthma UK nurse specialists on 07378 606 728 or give them a call on 0300 222 5800 to talk through any concerns. Both are open 9-5 Monday to Friday.
